In a rare move, Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani suspended Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Falak Naz for two days on Tuesday due to her “unruly” behavior during a Senate session. The session, which had been proceeding smoothly, took a sharp turn after independent senator and former PTI member Faisal Vawda was given the floor.
Vawda’s speech sparked outrage from Senator Naz, who protested his right to speak, accusing him of being ungrateful to PTI leader Imran Khan. Naz vocally criticized Vawda, claiming that he owed his position to Khan and should not speak against him. Despite her demands for the chair to silence Vawda, the session continued.
Frustrated, Naz persuaded fellow PTI leaders Shibli Faraz and Ali Zafar to stage a walkout in protest, which they did. The Senate Chairman then directed PPP leader Sherry Rehman to convince the PTI senators to return, but they refused.
As Vawda continued to criticize Imran Khan and the PTI leadership, tensions escalated further. Verbal exchanges between Vawda and Naz intensified, with profanities being hurled. Some senators, including those from the opposition, demanded that both lawmakers be suspended, though the chairman ultimately only suspended Naz for two days.
Naz responded defiantly, shouting “Imran Khan Zindabad” upon hearing of her suspension. The session was then adjourned until Thursday.
Earlier in the session, PTI’s Shibli Faraz condemned the arrests of PTI lawmakers from Parliament, describing the action as a violation of the institution’s sanctity and likening it to a raid on criminals.
