Now it has emerged that at least 55 people died in the incident in a landslide in a remote part of southern Ethiopia, local authorities said on Monday. This death toll is only expected to increase as more search operations are undertaken.
‘’Currently, the Gofa zone Communications Affairs Department has identified over 55 people from the bodies of the landslide and the zonal chief Dagmawi Zerihun presumed the death toll will rise. ’’
The slide caused by torrential rains happened at about 10:00 am (0700 GMT) in this area. Dagmawi also mentioned that the case of searching for the survivors is still active, and the operations are active and energetic.
This area also has a history of similar sad incidents. Two disasters of landslides occurred within a week in 2018 that claimed the lives of at least 32 persons.
