Cristiano Ronaldo Dismisses Retirement Rumors, Commits to Portugal's Future

Speaking on his current age and his football position, the Portuguese star footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has come out to clarify the chatter on his retirement saying, ‘I don’t have the plan to retire from international football. ’ During a press conference before the Nations League game between Portugal and Croatia in Lisbon, the 39-year-old player left no doubt that he wants to continue representing his nation.

“When the time is right, I will leave the team”, Ronaldo said calmly but he insisted that his mission is to try and help Portugal win more titles. He recalled the example of his compatriot and former teammate Pepe who gracefully retired in late August this year at the age of 41 saying,” If I feel I am of no help anymore, I will retire. ”

Ronaldo, a Ballon d’Or winner five times, has been playing for Al-Nassr Football Club in Saudi Arabia for close to two years. This year during the European Championship, CR7 failed to deliver goals for Portugal which was knocked out in the quarter-final stage, however, the football star shows no signs of committing to the national team. He therefore stated that he never thought of quitting the national team explaining that the Portugal coach Roberto Martinez is still behind him.

Ronaldo accepted the expectation that accompanies the national team but pointed out that a difficult period in any footballer’s career “helps you grow. ” Portugal will play with the Scotts in Lisbon after Croatia’s match.

When Frank Riberas asked Ronaldo to retire he replied that he only retires when he wants to and his recent comments further showed how much he still loves football and wants to continue playing until he wants to. For now, the fans keep expecting the player to lead the Portuguese national team in future international tournaments.
