State media citing authorities report that at least 50 people have been killed in the floods as search and rescue continued after central China was hit by heavy rains in late July. The downpours due to Typhoon Gaemi proved destructive to Zixing City in Hunan Province where 15 people are still missing says state broadcaster CCTV.
However, all the villages in the affected areas of Zixing City have been able to recover from the impact in terms of opening up roads, electricity, communication, water supply, etc. The residents have been evacuated and measures to restore the place after the catastrophe are being made.
The rush of heavy rains was a part of the extreme weather conditions recorded across China in this summer season and compelled nearly 300000 people to abandon their homes and stymied public transport in the eastern part of the country. Last month the northern province of Shaanxi was also badly hit by severe weather, which led to the collapse of a highway bridge due to heavy rain, 38 people were killed.
From the example, it is clear that the country that is emitting the largest amount of greenhouse gases is China, and the effects of climate change – extreme and frequent weather phenomena – have become a part of this country’s life.
