New York (AFP) – Top-ranked Iga Swiatek reached her second US Open quarter-final on Monday with a straight-sets triumph over 16th seed Liudmila Samonsova. Polish number five held on to prevail 6-4, 6-1,, and demonstrated that complete control by closing out eight of the last nine games.

It was a chase for her sixth Grand Slam title for four-time French Open winner Swiatek. Next up for the home hope is American sixth seed Jessica Pegula, whom Raducanu beat in round four en route to winning her maiden Grand Slam title at last year’s US Open.

Pegula won her round of 16 match against Russia’s Diana Shnaider 6-4, 6- in the Wednesday earlier in the day. The clash of Swiatek and Pegula will be one of the most interesting and exciting ones because both these women are fighting for a place in the semi-final.
