Iran Signals Progress: Nuclear Deal Talks Back on the Table

Iran said to be ready to return to the negotiating table with the US over the nuclear deal, Tehran’s acting foreign minister Ali Bagheri Kani said in an interview with Newsweek published Tuesday.

These comments came as Bagheri Kani had some testy appearance at the United Nations Security Council in New York.

The United States, under the leadership of Donald Trump as the president of the country at the time pulled out of the agreement in 2018. This pact between Iran and six world powers was intended to cap the country’s nuclear plans.

Negotiations aimed at restarting the talks directly between the U.S. and Iran have failed the process. However, the presence of Iran fails to unveil the situation while being a part of the agreement as it continues to scale back commitments given new sanctions by the U.S.

Newsweek reported Bagheri Kani’s statement: “Regarding foreign policy, he stated that Tehran is still willing to engage in talks with Washington regarding the renewal of the talks concerning mutual returning to the Nuclear deal.”

Bagheri Kani also added that Iran wants to focus on developing relations with China, Russia as well as with the countries of the region. He stated that due to the continued aggression of Israel Iran would be looking forward to intensified action on the Gaza Strip conflict.

A week ago, the representatives of the Biden administration claimed that the United States is ready to resume the nuclear talks with Iran under the new President of the country.

Bagheri Kani became the acting foreign minister after Hossein Amirabdollahian, the former minister, and Ebrahim Raisi, the president of Iran died in a helicopter crash in May.

After these events the Iranians chose Masoud Pezeshkian as president. Pezeshkian, belonging to the moderate wing, has stated his goal of following a moderate foreign policy and easing hostilities with the nations who signed the 2015 nuclear deal.
