Orlando Bloom, 47, underwent a dramatic transformation for his latest role in The Cut. To portray a retired boxer who goes to extreme lengths to lose weight, Bloom shed an astonishing 52 pounds in just three months.
During an interview with Variety at the Toronto Film Festival, Bloom opened up about the intense process. He explained that he gradually reduced his food intake over three months to hit his lowest weight right before filming. “I started at about 185 pounds and lost 52 pounds by the end,” Bloom shared, adding that the experience tested him both physically and mentally.
Reflecting on the challenge, he said, “It wasn’t just the calorie restriction, but the mental aspect that surprised me the most—like the sleep deprivation and living in that headspace for so long.”
The film, which premiered on September 5, showcases Bloom’s character taking extreme steps to drop weight, such as using diuretics and even draining blood from his body. The intensity of the film left quite an impact on the audience, with Bloom revealing, “Someone in my row passed out!” Director Sean Ellis even joked about putting that on the film’s poster.
Bloom’s fiancée, singer Katy Perry, was also deeply moved after watching the movie. “She told me she needed a stiff drink,” Bloom said, noting how much the role and his transformation affected her.
