The world’s oldest person Maria Branyas has died at the age of 117 in Spain.

Maria Branyas, or, as she was known until the end of her days, the oldest woman in the world, has died in her sleep at the age of 117. This sadly was affirmed on Tuesday on her official X account by her family and on a nursing home representative in Spain where the star spent her last days. “Maria Branyas has left us. She passed away as she wanted: I’m still heartbroken that my beautiful angel mother has left us and gone to heaven ‘asleep,’ happy, and without suffering,’ the tweet, written by her daughter, said.

Maria Branyas turned 117 on March 4 and became the oldest person in the world in January of 2023, Guinness World Records stated. She was born in San Francisco in 1907, but from the age of seven, she lived in Catalonia, Spain. She practically saw most of the big events in Spanish history as well as two world eras and two global pandemics in her 101 years having been born in 1919 and having witnessed the Spanish Civil War, the Spanish flu, and Covid 19.

In what would turn out to be her last posting before she died the following day, Branyas wrote on X, ‘I am weak.
The time has come, don’t cry, my tears…as you know me, wherever I go, I will be happy.

Branyas experienced many astonishing moments; she was married to Dr. Joan Moret with whom she had three children. Her husband died in 1976 and her son August in an accident, but she remained happily and peacefully alive. A lot of attention was paid to her long life, as well as to the gene pool, quiet life, and warm relations with the family members.

Maria Branyas of Spain was 117 at the time of her passing and she was the 12th oldest verified person to have ever lived.
