Tragic Bus Accident in Yazd Claims Lives of Pakistani Pilgrims

A tragic bus accident that occurred in Yazd, Iran has claimed the lives of at least 35 Pakistani pilgrims and left 15 others critically injured. The accident happened last night around the Taftan-Dehshir checkpoint.

As stated by the Iranian media, the bus after the accident turned over and burst into flames. Maulana Qamar Abbas Naqvi, a member of a peace committee from Larkana, said that 30 people were killed on the spot and five more died in the hospital. He said that out of the 15 passengers who sustained injuries, all of them were in critical condition.

According to Iran’s Mehr News Agency, 28 people were killed in the attack. Local hospitals have been put on alert to attend to the injured persons.

The bus that was involved in the accident was a 53-seater that was in a convoy of two buses with each bus having about 52 passengers. The circumstances that led to the accident are still unknown. Maulana Shah Murad Sharifi, a Qom seminary student from Larkana, said that while five to six passengers were slightly injured, most of the passengers on the bus were in critical condition and were being treated at a government hospital.

Sharifi also said that there were some rumors that the brakes of the vehicle could have failed before the occurrence of the accident.

The emergency response teams were quickly on the scene and took the dead bodies and the wounded to nearby hospitals. The situation remains critical as the work to deal with the consequences of this sad event goes on.
