Wayanad Tragedy: Death Toll Soars to 151

The rescue operation in a natural disaster hit Keral’s Wayanad district was launched early Wednesday morning seeking the survivors. The disaster which occurred a day earlier, has had at least 151 people dead and many more still missing.

This was occasioned by depressions that caused some areas to experience heavy rains which saw the land give way leading to the formation of slips whereby hill slopes gave way and there was a display of mud, water, and rocks all over the beautiful scenic area which is popular among tourists in India. It has been the State’s worst calamity since the devastating floods last seen in 2018.

The landslides which occurred early in the Tuesday morning displaced some of the 350 families that reside in the region. From the accounts received, many houses were pulled down and also many trees had been felled. It was seen that the rescuers were lifted up with ropes over forward slushy boggy currents.

Concerning transportation, authorities are in the process of preparing to construct a Bailey bridge to interconnect the region as the prime bridge towards Chooralmala was destroyed. Revenue minister of the state K. Rajan said this while talking to Asianet TV.

The weather department informs that after this Tuesday filled with heavy rain that has hampered rescue operations, there should be some light on Wednesday. However, the downpour is forecasted to be emphatic repeatedly as the day goes by.
