Will Your Bills Go Up? K-Electric Proposes New Electricity Price Increase

K-Electric has asked the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for permission to raise electricity prices for Karachi consumers by Rs5.45 per unit. This request is based on the fuel cost adjustment (FCA) for May and June.

If approved, this will mean an increase of Rs2.53 per unit for May and Rs2.92 per unit for June, reflecting the rise in fuel prices. NEPRA is set to review this application on July 30 to make a final decision on the proposed rate hike.

It’s not just Karachi that might be affected. Consumers of state-owned distribution companies (DISCOs) could also see higher bills. The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has made a request similar to NEPRA’s for a Rs2.10 per unit increase under the monthly FCA.

NEPRA will consider the CPPA’s request on July 31 to decide whether to approve the price hike for DISCOs’ consumers.

This potential increase in tariffs comes at a time when energy costs are already high, putting additional pressure on household budgets and business expenses in Karachi and other areas.
